What MediaWiki is
MediaWiki table markup opens with {| and a class, marks headers with an exclamation mark and rows with |-.
Wikipedia editors and anyone running a MediaWiki install.
What HTML is
An HTML table is a table element containing thead and tbody, with th cells for headers and td cells for data.
Web pages, email templates and anything pasted into a CMS.
What changes when you convert MediaWiki to HTML
Both cell styles are read: one cell per line, and several on a line separated by exclamation marks or double pipes, which is the form most Wikipedia tables use. Cell attributes before a single pipe are dropped, since style="text-align:right" is presentation rather than data. Wiki links come through as their display text, so [[France|the French Republic]] arrives as the French Republic, and reference markers are removed.
Semantic markup: a real thead, a real tbody, th for the header row. Angle brackets and ampersands in your data are escaped, so a value like <script> is written safely and shows as text on the page.
What carries over from MediaWiki to HTML
HTML can express everything MediaWiki holds about a table, so this conversion is about shape rather than loss.
MediaWiki and HTML can express the same things about a table, so nothing is lost here - only rewritten. Tables open with {| and close with |}, and a cell can hold templates or another table. The only common table format with real header cells, spans and nested tables.
That makes this a change of notation rather than of content: the same values, the same columns, the same order, written with the markers HTML expects instead of the ones MediaWiki uses.
The identifier 007 comes out of the HTML as 007. Reading it as a number would have made it 7, and an id that changes value is worse than one that stays text.
The role "Analyst, data" survives with its comma, in one cell rather than split across two. That is the first thing to check in any converted table, and the usual place a HTML file goes wrong.
The quotes around Jonah "Jo" Pryce are written as the HTML entity " in the HTML.
