Semantic markup, not a grid of divs
A table element with th cells tells a screen reader that the first row labels the columns, so a cell can be read as its column name followed by its value. A grid built from divs tells it nothing, and the same content becomes a stream of unlabelled numbers.
It also means the table is styleable with plain CSS selectors and sortable by any script that expects a table, rather than needing everything wired up by hand.
Escaping
Angle brackets, ampersands and quotes in your data are escaped on the way out. A cell containing <script> is written as <script> and shows on the page as text rather than running. Copying unescaped user data into a page is one of the older ways to introduce a cross-site scripting bug.
Making it fit on a phone
A wide table will push a page sideways on a narrow screen. Wrapping it in a div with overflow-x set to auto keeps the scrolling inside the table instead of moving the whole page. That is what the wrap option produces.
